Pre-shipment inspection is the final checkpoint before a private label pet supplement order leaves the factory. Once products are shipped, fixing mistakes becomes more expensive and time consuming. For importers, Amazon sellers, distributors, and DTC pet brands, a simple inspection process can help protect product quality and reduce risk.
Pre-shipment inspection does not need to be complicated, but it should cover the most important details.
Check product and quantity
The first step is confirming that the correct product has been produced. Buyers should verify product name, formula category, package count, SKU, and total quantity. If the order includes several products, each SKU should be checked separately.
For example, hip and joint support, probiotics, calming chews, omega 3, and multivitamins should not be mixed or labeled incorrectly.
Review packaging and label accuracy
Packaging mistakes are common and can create serious problems. Buyers should check label spelling, barcode, product count, ingredient panel, feeding directions, brand name, and any required warning text. The label should match the final approved artwork.
Bottle color, cap color, pouch style, carton marks, and shrink wrap should also be reviewed if they are part of the order.
Inspect appearance and consistency
The product should match the approved sample as closely as possible. For soft chews, check color, size, texture, smell, and whether chews are broken or stuck together. For tablets, check cracking, dust, color, and count. For powders, check color, smell, clumping, and packaging seal.
Small variation can happen in manufacturing, but major differences should be discussed before shipment.
Confirm carton information
Outer carton information matters for warehousing and shipping. Buyers should check carton quantity, gross weight, net weight, carton dimensions, SKU marks, and destination labels if required. Clear carton information makes receiving and inventory management easier.
If the order is going to Amazon FBA, the buyer should confirm packaging and label requirements with their logistics provider.
Request photos or videos
For remote buyers, photos and videos are useful inspection tools. The factory can provide photos of finished products, packed cartons, labels, sealing, and pallet preparation. A short video can also show product appearance and packing status.
This is not a replacement for all types of third-party inspection, but it helps buyers catch obvious issues before shipment.
Keep inspection records
Buyers should keep inspection photos, final packing list, invoice, approved artwork, and communication records. These files are useful for future reorders and quality tracking.
