Sample approval is one of the most important steps in a private label pet supplement project. Before mass production, buyers should carefully review the product sample and confirm that it matches the brand’s expectations. A rushed sample approval can lead to packaging errors, formula misunderstandings, customer complaints, or delays after production.
For OEM and ODM pet supplement projects, a simple sample approval checklist can help buyers and manufacturers communicate clearly.
Confirm product appearance
The first step is to check appearance. For soft chews, buyers should review color, size, shape, surface texture, and consistency. For tablets, they should check tablet size, hardness, color, and any coating or marking. For powders, buyers should review color, smell, flow, and whether the product mixes as expected.
The final product does not need to look like a human supplement, but it should look clean, consistent, and suitable for the pet wellness category.
Review smell and flavor direction
Pet supplement samples should be evaluated from the pet owner’s experience. Strong odor, unusual smell, or poor palatability can affect daily use. Buyers should discuss flavor direction with the manufacturer, especially for soft chews and chewable tablets.
If the product targets dogs, flavors such as chicken, beef, peanut butter, or natural savory profiles may be considered depending on formula and market preference.
Check serving size and package count
Sample approval should include serving size confirmation. Buyers need to know how many chews, tablets, scoops, or grams are recommended per day. This affects label text, product claims, cost per serving, and customer expectations.
Package count should also be confirmed. A 60 count bottle, 90 count bottle, or 120 count bottle can create different price points and user experiences.
Review label and packaging sample
Packaging should be checked before mass production. Buyers should confirm bottle size, pouch style, label dimensions, label position, cap color, seal, barcode, and carton information. If the label has small text, spelling errors, or incorrect layout, it should be corrected before approval.
Private label brands should keep a final approved artwork file and make sure the factory uses the same version.
Confirm formula direction
The buyer should confirm that the sample is based on the agreed formula direction. This includes active ingredients, support category, target pet type, and any important exclusions. For example, a joint support soft chew and a calming chew may have very different ingredient goals.
If the product is an ODM formula, sample feedback should be specific. Instead of saying “improve it,” buyers should explain whether they want a softer texture, lighter smell, smaller chew size, or different packaging.
Approve in writing
After reviewing the sample, buyers should approve it in writing. This creates a clear reference for production. It also helps both sides avoid confusion later.
